What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) is a well-known mood, or affective disorder in adults, but only in recent years has it been recognized in children and adolescnets.  It is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.  Most mental heatlh professionals are not prepared to recognize this disorder in children and adolescents.  As a result, many children and adolescents with this disorder are misdiagnosed.  The most common misdiagnoses are attention deficit disorder and conduct disorder.
